Legalized Online Gambling in New Jersey Likely Soon
Although there were attempts to legalize and regulate online gambling in the state of New Jersey in 2011, the online gambling bill was vetoed by the governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie. Governor Christie has pointed out that although he used his power to veto the bill, he is in support of online gambling in New Jersey, but he is concerned that when the law does pass, that it should be one that leaves no room open for problems. Governor Christie said: “I think New Jersey should be in that (Internet gambling) business. I think we should be an epicenter for that business, but I want to do it right. I do not want to rush and get legislation that either doesn’t pass state constitutional muster, or creates other problems for us.” There are currently renewed efforts to try and legalize online gambling in New Jersey, since the United States Department of Justice announced that the Wire Act of 1961 does not apply to any forms of online gambling other than sports gambling. The senator that has been pushing the online gambling bill, Senator Ray Lesniak, said: “I expect that we can get it through the Legislature and signed by the Governor within the first few weeks of the new session. There are competing opinions on that within the administration and within the industry, but I am convinced that we can move forward and get it up and rolling without amending the constitution.” It is expected that when the online gambling law passes, it will include the following points: – Only residents of New Jersey will be allowed to play in New Jersey. – Age restriction of 21. – Some revenues will go to the ailing horse racing industry. – Advertising restrictions will be in place. – Card games will only be offered in Atlantic City’s land based casinos, and not online.
